Re-energised Nitty Kutchie back with new song
After suffering a heart attack in June, dancehall-reggae legend Nitty Kutchie said he's now in "excellent" health and back on his fitness regime and musical journey, following his recent collaborative single Bad Anywhere.
He told THE WEEKEND STAR that he went to Portland to link Popcaan, hoping to do a collaboration.
"And to how God suh great and powerful, as wi reach dung there, di man studio set up inna him house aready and mi start one song but it did have a whole heap a cuss words in it, and him (Popcaan) seh 'Uncle, dat too hash, enuh,' and him change up di lyrics and mi try again," he explained. Shortly after, reggae artiste CP Ink jumped on the rhythn and added the lyrics " Dem don't tough, dem don't bad, mi ago send dem guh know God" which later became the song's punchline.
"Popcaan come in the studio and seh 'Seh dat again...yow record dat' and mi seh 'Yes fadda God, it look like a it dis now, look like a di collab dis,'" Nitty Kutchie added. Popcaan, who is the main songwriter, then used a melodic flow from a popular Pinchers song then immediately reached out for the legendary artiste to add his original feel to it, to which he obliged. Blended with the rootsy, sweet 80's sound from Pinchers, and the 90's old school dancehall medley of Nitty Kutchie and CP Ink, mixed with Popcaan's flair and modern sound, supporters have dubbed the song "the real sound of dancehall music".
The veteran said that though the title might have several interpretations, his main lesson is showing Jamaicans' strong representation wherever they are.
"As mi seh in my lyrics, ' Wi bad anyweh on di map. Wi affi can defend wiself and be a strong-minded person and anyweh yuh deh, yuh affi can put yuh foot down. But like how in our Jamaican term we'd say 'Wi likkle but wi tallawah', a supm similar to dat, meaning seh wi stand out," he clarified.
He said his recovery from the heart attack has been great and he's back to his old self, while being more cautious.
"Yea man, mi back inna di workout ting, everything up and running yah now and mi feel good. I'm doing things at a lighter weight, mi naah be so crazy again because most people believe I was showing off. But I was jus showing di people dem yuh can do it and motivate each other. Sometimes mi used to gwaan like mi is a 'prover'. A man will seh, 'Yuh cyaah pull up dem banana tree deh outta di root' and by yuh look, dem deh a grung. But now yuh can seh it and mi walk pass it," he laughed.
