MBU draw but closest rivals also drop points
LEADERS Montego Bay United (MBU) were held to a goalless draw by Portmore United in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) at Jarrett Park yesterday.
Despite sharing the points in a tightly contested affair, MBU remain on top with 35 points. Racing United were also held to a draw, 1-1, by Dunbeholden FC and remain in second with 33 points, two ahead of Portmore in third. Dunbeholden are ninth with 19 points.
Xavier Gilbert, coach of MBU, said after adding explosive former Arnett Gardens winger Kimani Arbouine to their roster, they are looking to recruit other top players in the transfer window.
"We are still looking to confirm others who we have targeted and hopefully things will go well as we look to bolster the squad in this busy period," said Gilbert.
Gilbert stated that MBU are travelling now more than every other team so it can be challenging.
"January and February are very hectic. When you look at the schedule it's two matches per week so players are going to be fatigued. We will continue to work and that is why it is important that we have the quality to call on right away," added Gilbert.
Both teams created chances yesterday but were unable to find the breakthrough, with disciplined defending and goalkeeping on display throughout the match.
Meanwhile, Rodolph Austin, head coach of Portmore, said it was a difficult game.
"We just had to be tactical and compact while we tried to nullify their attacks. They (MBU) are the leaders and have been winning and playing consistently throughout the season," said Austin.
"MBU have had a dip in their performance but we came here expecting a tough game and that's what we got. We are happy for the point," added Austin
Portmore United will take confidence from the result, while Montego Bay United will now turn their attention to maintaining their advantage as the title race intensifies.
MBU were the more dominant team and created the majority of the chances but Portmore's defending made it difficult for them to break the deadlock.
