Garvey Maceo, Glenmuir in heavyweight showdown
Defending champions Garvey Maceo High School and former winners Glenmuir High will clash in a top-of-the-table Zone 'I' first-round daCosta Cup football game today at Garvey Maceo, starting at 3:30 p.m.
Both teams are locked on 18 points from six wins apiece, but Glenmuir lead the zone, thanks to a superior goal difference. They have scored 36 goals while conceding just one, compared to Garvey Maceo's 24 goals with three against.
Today's clash could provide a psychological edge heading into the next round, as both teams are set to meet again. The eventual zone winner will gain the advantage of playing at home in the return leg, adding extra spice to this encounter.
With their traditionally strong and vocal home support, Garvey Maceo will be banking on the atmosphere to push them over the line. However, Glenmuir, with most of last year's squad intact, will be eager to avenge last season's defeat.
Led by dangerous forwards Orel Miller and Orane Watson, along with midfield maestro Dunsting Cohen, Glenmuir will start as slight favourites.
STRONG REBOUND
Meanwhile, Denbigh High, last year's Ben Francis Cup KO semi-finalists, have rebounded strongly after a shaky start in which they managed just one point from three games. Riding a three-match winning streak, they now sit joint-third with Kemps Hill on 10 points.
Denbigh will take on Bustamante High at the Wembley Centre of Excellence, and coming off a solid 2-0 win over Vere last Saturday, they are tipped to collect full points against an opponent who has already conceded 36 goals. A victory would lift Denbigh to 13 points and secure a top three finish.
Kemps Hill, also on 10 points, will host Vere in what promises to be a crucial showdown. The home side only need a draw to advance, while Vere must win to keep their hopes alive. A victory would push Vere to 10 points - with a healthy goal difference of six - putting them in prime position to sneak past their rivals into the next round.
In the other Zone I match, Winston Jones will host Foga Road in what is expected to be a low-stakes encounter.
