Gospel poet Latoya Hamilton is looking to spread hope and the message of God's comfort, love and kindness with her music.

"Gospel music has a way of travelling to your soul. And, whatever message is conveyed in this melody, you are giving it permission to enter the depths of your spirit, mind and heart," she told THE WEEKEND STAR.

The St Elizabeth native had an interesting conversation with God one day. She asked Him what she was created to do and was taken aback by the response. 'Write poems' was His answer.

"I didn't have an example of a gospel poet out there. When I questioned what I should write about, God said 'my life'. I was hesitant at first; I didn't want to put myself out there. But if I asked the question and God told me what to do, why would I want to do anything else?" Since answering that call, she has enjoyed every second of the journey, unearthing a passion she never knew existed.

Exploring that sweet spot between divine positivity and harmony in 2013, Hamilton discovered that many could relate to her words. Leggo Me Stuff was her first penned single, which soon became an album.

"I never saw what I was doing as a career; it was more of a hobby. To me, it was obedience to God and a way to help others," she said, noting that she is still learning about the music business as a career.

The journey so far has been wonderful. She sees ministering to an audience as an honour, one that she can never take for granted. People have been welcoming and they often share the positive impact her music has had on their own lives. She sees this as the biggest blessing.

Getting inspiration from her personal experiences, her songs and poems speak of overcoming obstacles and struggles. She doesn't have a favourite, but tracks like Self Esteem, Smiling Sisters, Holy Ghost and Spiritual War resonate with her.

Starting out without a team, the management aspect, she confessed, took the fun out of the music. She is now back on track in ministry, with a unit that specialises in booking and marketing. The global pandemic has been the greatest teacher of having an online presence, so she is currently working on that social media element.

"My ambition is for people to know God. If anybody listens to anything that I write, I hope it brings them closer to Him."
